Drumbeat Number 4

Welcome!

Welcome!  Chapter Presidents and Officers, to the Cowskin Prairie Drumbeat.  Again, we certainly hope you share this fourth Drumbeat with your chapter members, as we will be discussing the upcoming 2008 Oklahoma UDC Division Convention, to be held at Stonebrook Inn, in Grove, Oklahoma.  It is our hope to keep you and your chapter members informed of the many things planned, for the convention.

The above message is about to become a little old and tired, is it not?  We keep repeating it because it is important that the membership know about the big celebration of our division’s 100 years of service to the United Daughters of the Confederacy.  As the plans come together and preparations continue for the convention, we  continue to be  excited.  We look forward to being your hosts.

A reminder about the hotel rooms.  We are told that the hotell is already filled, EXCEPT for our UDC Block.  You might want to go ahead and make your reservations to assure your room.  Be sure to mention UDC, in order to receive the special rate.

The Historical Bus Trip, scheduled for Friday as a pre-Convention activity is coming together nicely.  Each chapter received a purple flyer in their Winter Board packets.  And there were plenty of the flyers available for each chapter to take home to other members.

We continue to work on the logistics of various parts of the Convention and it is all coming together.    We do hope that you and your chapter members will be with us for what is shaping up to be a fun time!  We all look forward to giving a big Oklahoma welcome to our President General!

Oklahoma Division Convention – Grove, Oklahoma

June 13-15, 2008

Celebrating

Oklahoma Division

100 Years of   Service to UDC!!!

The Clothes Horse

Let’s get ready for Convention!!

Plan to attend the Memorial Service on Saturday afternoon.  See information below.   According to the guidelines, one may dress tastefully.  This could include your mourning attire.

Mourning attire generally consists of dark colors such as black and navy blue.  Half mourning of the era includes grays and purples.

A few tips….

WHERE TO FIND THE BASICS:  There's nothing like garage sales to pick up lots of accessories and props to help build a good collection. Old wedding or prom dresses can make great dresses. A woman's below the knee skirt can become the child's prairie skirt.  A simple white apron helps that look, too.  One might consider collecting wigs, blazers, scarves, boots of all kinds…...the list could go on and on. Thrift shops are another place to look for lots of the base materials for outfits and uniforms from the era.

Another thing to have on hand is 2-sided fusible pellon or webbing. A couple of brand names are 'Wonder-Under' and 'Heat 'N Bond'.  This can help tremendously with eliminating the need to sew!

WHERE TO GET IDEAS: Utilize the books you read for costume ideas. In this case, there are books specifically on the clothing and uniforms of the War Between the States. Don't worry about getting every little detail -- do what you can. Imagination makes up for all the shortcomings.  Don't forget to use what you have what you may have on hand.

Ribbon shirt, by Native American Designs, worn twice.  White shirt w/purple, yellow, red, white, and green ribbon work on front/back.  Measurements:  bust 50”.  Call 918-248-4521.  COST $30.00

Handmade, including buttonholes, size 12 Peach w/burgundy trim, two-piece outfit, never worn.  Measurements: Blouse 42” bust; Skirt 32” waist, 37” length, with 2” hem.   Outfit includes burgundy bow and lace trim as well as white petticoat and drawers w/lace trim.  Call 918-542-4148.  COST: $100.00.

Cancellation of the Cherokee Queen

As those of you who attended winter board meeting and have been receiving the Drumbeat know, the Cowskin Prairie Chapter had planned that we would be taking a Saturday afternoon cruise on the Cherokee Queen.  However, the original plan sank like a rock when we recently learned that the Cherokee Queen had been chartered for that entire day and evening.  Therefore, plans are currently re-arranged.  According to the folks at the Cherokee Queen, it is will be available for anyone who wants to cruise on Sunday.  We will do our best to keep you posted on this.

No doubt, there will be other wonderful things scheduled for Saturday afternoon.  We look forward to a full day.  Your chapter members may want to consult the Grand Lake Magazine that was handed out at winter board meeting, as an aid in planning their trip to Grove.

 June 13, 2008

 Depart Stonebrook Inn at 8:00 a.m. – Return around 4:00 p.m.

We will be visiting Saline Courthouse, the last Cherokee district courthouse, where you will be free to walk around the grounds and enjoy the beauty of this wonderful historical site.   The Beck-Hildebrand Mill, which the Division contributed monies to for restoration, in 2007, is a scheduled stop.  We will also pay a visit to the Talbot Museum complex, which houses the records of the Beck-Hildebrand Mill and much more.  The group will take lunch [included] at the Mill or Museum, depending on scheduling.   Bring your picnic blankets or lawn chairs!

Step back in history, as we learn about Fort Wayne and the part it played in the War Between the States.  We will travel through Southwest City, Missouri, long known as the ‘jumping-off’ place for the Indian Territory and a trade center for Confederate and Union sympathizers, alike.

Near Southwest City, we will go out onto Cowskin Prairie, driving across miles of the historical prairie where Stand Watie and Sterling Price encamped and trained their troops.  We will be making a special stop on Cowskin Prairie.
