Drumbeat Number 3

Welcome!

Welcome!  Chapter Presidents and Officers, to the Cowskin Prairie Drumbeat.  Again, we certainly hope you share the Drumbeat with your chapter members, as we will be discussing the upcoming 2008 Oklahoma UDC Division Convention, to be held at Stonebrook Inn, in Grove, Oklahoma.  It is our hope to keep you and your chapter members informed of the many things planned, for the convention.

We trust everyone had a wonderful holiday season and were not without electricity and heat for any length of time.  Also, that you had no major storm or ice damage.  Those of us, here in the northeast corner of the state, did suffer damage and many of us were without power or telephones for up to a week.  Just think what we could have accomplished for the convention, with a telephone!

The Cowskin Prairie Chapter have already had “work” meetings this month, in preparation for the convention.  As the plans come together and preparations continue, we are becoming more and more excited.  We look forward to being your hosts, as we all come together to celebrate the Oklahoma Division’s 100 years of service to the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

So, plan to be with us and take part in all the activities!  Break out your Native American clothing, jewelry, shawls and your period clothing and step back in time with us.  It is our hope that you and your chapter members will join us for what promises to be an interesting and fun filled centennial celebration of the Oklahoma Division, UDC.  You may want to bring family, friends, and/or potential members along.  All are welcome!

The Clothes Horse

Let’s get ready for Convention!!

Sometimes just "shopping" in your own closet and household can be eye opening, once you get a feel for items that can be used to convey "Southern Spirit" of the War Between the States. From handkerchiefs and white cotton gloves to shawls, collars, and heirloom aprons from another time - once you have an idea what you are looking for - do it. Don't take a mental inventory of what you have, you'll overlook or forget something. Once you have physically taken stock of what you have, write it down. If you don't have your entire wardrobe out, but some in storage, check it all. This goes double if you have access to clothing that has been inherited. A quick look in the closet of one member finds blouses by the following brand names that can be worn with an appropriate skirt: Calle' Classics, Tom Boy of California, T. G. Hook, Inervisions by Ship N' Shore, Jessica McClintock (also labeled Gunnie Sax  and Jessica's Gunnies), and Liz Claiborne.

What about head gear?  Again, we make a trip into storage.  Is there anything that can be worn with something else?  Look items over closely, with a mindset to the past.  Perhaps there are ways to ‘re-do’  something contemporary by adding or taking away decorations.  Often, usable headwear can be located at vintage stores, flea markets, antique shops and, even, garage and yard sales.

For those of you who “just don’t have anything to wear” one consideration for the long skirt might be a simple gathered skirt, with elastic band.  It is just a few simple seams, with elastic added. Today, this can even be accomplished with fusible facings.  Not much sewing is required there!   A traditionally cut, solid, long-sleeved, man’s shirt without a pocket can easily be added to make a simple and easy outfit.

The possibilities are endless.  Put on your thinking cap, open your eyes and you will likely amaze yourself.

The Cowskin Prairie Chapter also sells certain period pieces.  For those interested in locating jewelry or period pieces for upcoming events or to add to your personal collection, click here.
