Drumbeat Number 1

Welcome!

Welcome!  Chapter Presidents and Officers, to the Cowskin Prairie Drumbeat.  We certainly hope you share the Drumbeat with your chapter members, as we will be discussing the upcoming 2008 Oklahoma UDC  Convention.  In this manner, we hope to keep you and your chapter members aware of the many things, upcoming, for the convention.

As a reminder, the convention will be held on Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees, Grove, Oklahoma, and June 13-15, 2008.  Please “save the date” and plan to come enjoy yourselves!

Get out your thinking/sharing caps and prepare to join our chapter for a step back in time, as we enjoy the historical area and learning about some of the activity which took place in the Indian Territory during the War Between the States.  The Indian Territory played an interesting roll, so come and benefit from a fun learning experience.

We already have several ideas on the drawing board and hope to consider several more.  There are a multitude of activities available for the entire family, so you might think about bringing everyone.  Additionally,

we are planning a special pre-convention activity.  There will be more about that in a later edition.

It is our hope that you and your chapter members will join us for what promises to be an interesting and fun filled centennial celebration of the Oklahoma Division, UDC.

Again, please share the Drumbeat with your members.  Any of you or your members who would like to receive the Drumbeat electronically, should supply us with the proper email addresses.  See back page for address.

The Clothes Horse

Let’s get ready for Convention!!

The Clothes Horse is a regular feature of the Drumbeat.  It is hoped that it will encourage and assist others with their period clothing projects.  So, if you have any ideas, patterns, thoughts or suggestions for the Clothes Horse, please do not hesitate to share!

Remember, as you build your wardrobe, you are in the driver’s seat.  You may select the fabrics and be as authentic as you desire.  Some ladies want to go “the whole nine yards” and others may prefer warmer or cooler fabrics, with or without fewer layers.  The choice is entirely yours, as we step back in time.  Sometimes we wear family jewelry or accessories, while others scout antique stores for authentic period pieces.

One quick idea is a simple gathered skirt in a basic color.  Since we are from the trans-Mississippi area, the skirt could be worn with or without hoops.  Afterall, there weren’t many teas or dress balls in the Indian Territory.  Many of us wear the same skirt both ways.  In the beginning, lots of women wear a simple ecru, cream, or off-white blouse with the skirt.   Or, one can simply add a blouse made of the same matching material, with or without trim.

From the basic skirt with top, one can add a bodice.  Sometimes these may have “add-on” items to help turn them into something fancier.  Below are a few drawings from a Ladies Sketchbook, which may be helpful.

Next month we will look colors, fabric ideas and patterns.

The Cowskin Prairie Chapter also sells certain period pieces.  For those interested in locating jewelry or period pieces for upcoming events or to add to your personal collection, click here.

On Cowskin Prairie, blacksmiths constructed forges to weld scrap iron into shells and canisters, using metals mined in the area.

Confederate Fair

There are some grand ideas in the works for the 2008 Confederate Fair.  As these ideas come together, we will be including information about the Confederate Fair in the Drumbeat.  We would like to do something a little

different for this fair.  It is our hope that with plenty of time and planning, we can make it a success in 2008.

SO, plan to take part in and attend the 2008 Confederate Fair.
