Press Release

The Cowskin Prairie Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy hosted a genealogical and historical seminar in Grove, Oklahoma, recently.  The War Between the States in Indian Territory Seminar drew attendees from the four state area.

Omar Reed, historian and living history re-enactor, from the Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma Military Park, was the featured speaker during the morning sessions. Dressed as a Confederate slave, wearing moccasins and carrying his prized leather shoes, he addressed the group.  Reed presented a realistic and entertaining program defining the hardships of life in the Indian Territory, during the War Between the States.  He brought his powder box, full of historical items of the era and gathered everyone around to see what medicines, food, etc., the soldier would have had in his possession.

Carrie Ann Cook, chapter vice president, Fairland, Oklahoma entertained the crowd during lunch with an interactive dramatization.  She addressed the group about her uncle's magic elixir and praised the wonders of Dr. Lippincott's tonic, offered to sell her last few bottles of elixir and then sent them down to "that there Sam Walton's General Store" for more.   She answered several questions regarding the use of the product and the maladies it could treat.

Jeffrey Patrick, Ranger and Librarian, from the Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, Republic, Missouri, guided the group through researching their War Between the States ancestors.  He listed numerous sources, their location and how to apply the information to research of the era.  Patrick’s in-depth PowerPoint presentation was quite useful and informative.  He also fielded many questions about such research, as well as use of the John K. and Ruth Hulston War Between the States Research Library, at the battlefield park.
